Troubleshooting

Problem:

Fill valve will not switch on/off.

Solution:

  1. Make sure the float is free and has not turned against the back wall of the cistern when the nut is tightened and the water supply is connected.
  2. If the valve is fed from a storage tank how much head of water do you have. (6 ft = 2.8 lbs or 0.2 bar). Water pressure can be dropped along the line if the tank is not directly above the toilet or the installation is old. Taking the cap off may give the impression of free flowing water but there is very little pressure.

Problem:

A clunk is heard as the valve shuts off.

Solution:

  1. All modern valves are equilibrium valves which are positively open or positively closed and will search out any loose pipes. Alternatively, in order to fit the new fill valve, some of the water has been drained off and the air in the pipework has moved.
  2. Turn off water at the main stopcock and turn on all cold taps including any outside ones also flush the toilets. This will allow the air back into the system. Turn on the water again then, working away from the stopcock, turn off the taps one by one, this will push the air through the pipes and should resolve the problem. It may have to be repeated a couple of times to get the air into the right places.

Problem:

Flapper closing too quickly.

Solution:

This is straightforward and always due to the chain being too slack. Once the flapper is raised more than halfway it will stay open until it uses the working water and will close when the water line comes down to the pin size air hole which is found immediately under the flat sealing area of the flapper. Unlike the siphon which has to empty the cistern to work effectively, the Fluidmaster flapper flush valve will leave 3" to 4" of water in the cistern after flushing as the removal of the siphon has increased the water volume significantly. This retained water will not affect the efficiency of the flush.

Problem:

Side mounted pushbutton.

Solution:

No problem, see diagram in the instruction sheet. Also, if preferred, leave the original side lever in place and put a short piece of copper tube over the lifting arm inside the cistern this acts as a counter balance and allows the flapper to close and minimise the work involved installing your Fluidmaster flapper flush valve.

Problem:

Does the flapper work on an old style double trap siphonic action toilet?

Solution:

Unfortunately, to fit the flapper you have to remove the aspirator and this type of toilet needs to be aspirated to start the siphonic action.

Problem:

The fill valve switches on/off frequently even when the toilet is not in use.

Solution:

  1. This is a warning signal to tell you that the flush valve is passing water. This usually happens when a new dual flush valve has been fitted and the installer has not adjusted the button correctly. When the button and lid have been put on it is lifting the float just enough to allow water leakage. The fill valve will then switch on long enough to replenish the water.
  2. Re-set the closing position of the flush valve.
